On stage 17 Finally the dominant teams loosened their grip on the race and allowed a break to escape to contest the stage finish. It took a while though, over 100 kilometres in fact after a furious start of attack after attack.
A huge group managed to form as the race hit the final three climbs and from the melé two riders soon became favourites for the win as the slopes of the Col du Noyer ripped the bunch to pieces. First Simon Yates looked in contention but then he was caught and passed by Richard Carapaz who then distanced the Briton to win and become the first Ecuadorian to ever win a stage at the Tour de France.
Stage 18 is the final chance for the non climbers, it’s very unlikely to be a sprint but the hilly run from Gap to Barcelonnette will tempt all those riders desperate to leave a mark on this year’s race. Riders such as Wout van Aert and world champion Mathieu van der Poel will surely be front and centre on what is set to be an explosive day in the saddle from the moment the flag drops.
